Nick & Marcia Alter  > Travel > Northern Cal, Oregon & Idaho: June - July 2005
On the road again -- this time, with sights on the Pacific Northwest and the Canadian Rockies. And we feel readier than ever. We have solar panels on our rooftop to charge up our four golf-cart batteries so we can be energy-independent in the wilds. And, as new members of the Elks, we can stay at Elks lodges in many of the communities we visit, often right downtown.

Having it both ways, we can stay in remote campsites for the best hiking, or, we can stay in downtown areas close to local goings-on and to community development departments where we can learn what they're doing to help their communities manage growth and promote a more sustainable future.

The "plan" is to cover as much of the scenic beauty in the Northwest as we can in roughly four months, and to be home in late October.

Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 14 -- On the fourth day of our trip, we pulled into our first-ever (out-of-town) Elks lodge -- this one, in Nevada City. And what a pleasure the Elks lodges have been for us ever since. We love 'em! They've become a kind of home away from home, with friendly hosts, lots of amenities, often with downtown locations when we need to be in a downtown area. This particular lodge was brand new, situated in some woods where we had great privacy and full hookups. We biked into and around Nevada City, which, while hilly, was very scenic, and had a friendly rural feel to it along with interesting shops.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 15 -- Marcia breaks in our new solar shower, which can deliver 105-degree showers after the water sits in the sun for about two hours.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 17 -- Our first waterfall of the trip was here at Indian Falls, near Quincy. Waterfalls are a passion of Nick's.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 17 -- The Yellow Creek area near Indian Falls presented us with this colorful display of stones that begged to be photographed.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 18 -- Or first snowfall since Ann Arbor...in mid June, would you believe, as our elevation rose to 6,000-plus feet on Mt. Lassen. Nick still delivers a pretty decent fastball.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 18 -- McArthur-Burney Falls
Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 19 -- A day to remember: the day we met Isabel and her dad, Bruce. We were at a campsite near McCloud (Fowlers Camp), and our site was next to the one at which Bruce and Isabel pitched their tent. Thanks to solar power, we can park in any campsite and have electricity. This has brought us closer to true campers and the outdoors while separating us further from the regular RV crowd. On this occasion, it brought us together with two enchanting people we would never otherwise have met. Bruce was taking Isabel camping while his wife was escorting his other daughter to Japan to perform in a youth chorale. As so often happens with kids and dogs, Isabel struck up a conversation with Slim, and that's how it all began for us. The long and short of it is that we hope to be seeing them again as we wind our way down the Coast in October.
