Nick & Marcia Alter  > Travel > California & Texas - January 2004
January 11th begins our great adventure on the road in "HOWIE" (Home on Wheels -- Intrepid Explorer), our new 24-foot motorhome. Off we go for the next four months to meander through Texas, the Deep South and Florida with no more than a general sense of where we might go and what we might do each day, other than to "be in the moment." We begin in January with Southern California and Texas. Hasta luego!

Nick & Marcia Alter > Our multi-talented captain and navigator for the trip also served as the motorhome's interior decorator. Here, she is seen creating a high-tech storage system for our kitchen utensils in the RV, using a vintage 1940s Singer sewing machine.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JANUARY 11th. Our first stop was San Clemente where Nick re-united with his old Navy buddy, John Yuhas, and John's wife Mary Anne. John and Nick went through Naval OCS together. After the Navy, Nick followed John to jobs at Procter & Gamble and Xerox in the sixties. Until this moment, they hadn't seen each other for nearly forty years.

Nick & Marcia Alter > JANUARY 12th. The second stop was for lunch at Cardiff by the Sea with Vic and Val Rosenberg, two of our favorite people from Ann Arbor who happened to be in the San Diego area for an annual meeting of the American Library Association.
Nick & Marcia Alter > Couldn't resist this shot of King Leo from the cab of our motorhome, although this 1901 king is of an earlier realm than Marcia's dad.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JANUARY 15th. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) surprised us with its stunning architecture styled after the temples of Bhutan. Apart from its unique character and beauty, we were reminded of our good friends in SLO, Marion and Paul Wolff, whose daughter is married to a citizen of Bhutan. Paul is an architect, as well.
