Nick & Marcia Alter  > Travel > From California to Ohio: June 25 - July 11, 2004
Here we go again, off on another trek across the country. This time, to parts northeast. First, to see friends and family in Sacramento, Chicago, Ann Arbor, Toledo, Ithaca and western Connecticut. Then, to head into the Berkshires, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before heading down the eastern seaboard with probable stops in Cape Cod, Rhode Island and Amagansett, perhaps as far as the Carolinas. At that point we'll begin to wend our way westward toward home. The big event early-on in the trip was our stay in Toledo for a week-long family reunion to celebrate Marcia's parents' 60th wedding anniversary (see also http://nick.smugmug.com/gallery/163260). But there have also been many other highs in reconnecting with people and places we hadn't seen for a long time. Meanwhile, a wonderful new friend and retired MD, Chuck Mendelson, is staying at our home, taking care of things there, until he can move to a retirement community in Santa Barbara possibly late this year.

Nick & Marcia Alter > JULY 14TH. Our newfound friend, Chuck Mendelson, moved into our guest quarters in mid-June, shortly before we hit the road, and is looking after the homestead while we're gone. Blessed with a sharp mind and wit, Chuck's also a terrific cook. Here, he shows Marcia the right way to sautee petrole sole while getting the hang of our kitchen before we leave town.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 29TH. We left home on June 24th, spent the night in Sacramento (with Sunny, Clayton and Irene), and then made a mad dash for Chicago, which we reached in three days and where we spent the first few hours touring Frank Lloyd Wright's first studio and several homes he designed in Oak Park. This beautie is close to the studio, down the street from Wright's old home and studio. Other shots of Wright's Oak Park designs are in a separate gallery: http://nick.smugmug.com/gallery/172880.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 29TH. Much as we enjoyed the Frank Lloyd Wright stuff, the main attraction in Chicago was seeing Shani, Jeff and Rebecca. We were warmly greeted with this welcome-sign of Rebecca's, which was spread across the front of their house when we arrived.

Nick & Marcia Alter > JUNE 30TH. Slim was a big hit with Rebecca, who was a big hit with us.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JULY 1ST. Upon arriving in Ann Arbor, we immediately headed out to Portage Lake for an afternoon and dinner with Doug and Betty Smith at the Club, where Tom Ehman (an old friend and the club's owner) welcomed us and let us hook-up the RV for the night.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JULY 2ND. In recent years, Ken, Viki and their four boys have made the annual trek to California where they'd spend several days with us. This year, the tables got turned and we visited them. Here, Adam and Viki share a laugh with Marcia in the RV.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JULY 2ND. Eric can never get his fill of Slim, who takes refuge on Nick's lap in the RV.
Nick & Marcia Alter > JULY 4TH. Seeing and squeezing Jayna is always a top priority for us when we're in Ann Arbor.
